I am the owner of the Mahid Law Firm, a privacy and cybersecurity law firm. I graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2002. I began my legal career with the American Bar Association in Washington DC. I then went on to spend the majority of my legal career working for Humana Insurance Company where I managed a team of corporate attorneys in the Procurement and Vendor Services Department. Few departments have as much enterprise wide insight and business engagement as the vendor services groups. My team was the first point of contact for privacy issues, enterprise technology security issues, contracts for goods and services, and government contracting. I've negotiated high complexity agreements ranging from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of millions of dollars. I've seen the privacy and enterprise security issues that regularly arise when engaging vendors.
I started my firm in 2016 and began representing healthcare technology startup companies. I negotiated commercial contracts and advised on privacy matters because almost all of my clients handled personally identifiable information (whether they realized it or not). My client base grew from health care to marketing and advertising companies, consulting firms, and physician practices. I began seeing that many companies---regardless of industry, may not necessarily require full time in-house privacy and commercial contracting counsel, but they still need to understand regulations and risk. Privacy regulations are about knowing the law and following it. Cybersecurity is about understanding vulnerabilities and mitigating risk. I help my clients get to know their data. I help them understand what data they are receiving, what they are using it for, where they are putting it, how long they are keeping it, and how (or if) they are destroying it. I help them understand best practices in cybersecurity so they can take the right steps to prevent breaches and also be prepared to handle them should they occur.
I believe in providing services that businesses need in a way that makes sense for them financially. I take the time to understand a prospective client's concerns and goals and try to come to a payment arrangement that reflects actual value and fair pricing. I serve as a consultant for Goose & Gander, an IT Consulting firm founded by Robin Roberson and Kenneth Knoll. I am also a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and the Cyber Law Consortium.
I am not working, I love spending time with my four daughters and husband. I'm a 5:00am swimmer and I have a very strong passion for mentoring bright young students who are forging their career paths to become future leaders in their professions and in their communities.
